Life Begins in the Garden: Kombucha

Kombucha….it’s all the craze. And for good reason, too. Kombucha is a fermented tea drink, lightly sweetened and fuzzy. It is traditionally made from black tea but variations with green and herbal teas are just as delicious and beneficial. I’ve made hibiscus flower pomegranate green tea Kombucha and not only was it tasty, hibiscus aids in lowering blood pressure. Kombucha is produced by fermenting tea using a “symbiotic ‘colony’ of bacteria and yeast” called a SCOBY, referred to by some as the “mushroom.” One of kombucha’s greatest health benefits is its ability to detox the body. Detoxification aides in the prevention of cancers and produces healthier livers. Kombucha contains good bacterias that keep digestive systems healthy, aiding in increased ability to fight gut discomfort and irregularities. Once a SCOBY is obtained, Kombucha is easy to make and much cheaper than buying at the grocery store. I was lucky enough that my mom had one to give to me as sh has been making Kombucha for some time.
