Coffeehouse, coffee shop or cafe – an establishment which primarily serves hot coffee, related coffee beverages and other hot beverages.
Sure, we all know what a coffee shop is. But what makes the hundreds of local coffee shops in Pittsburgh so different? What makes a customer choose one over the other? Coffee is coffee, right? Wrong – it’s so much more.
There has been handful of coffee shops that I have been wanting to try, but when it came to thinking of one to go to, I blanked. So I did what anyone in the 21st century would do – I Googled it. I wanted to go to a place that was close to the city and that offered food (I knew food was the only way I was going to get my boyfriend to go with me). My search results came back, I decided on Caffe Mona la bistro on Penn Ave. It had a 4.4 star rating and was described as a “Comfortable Euro-style cafe serving breakfast, sweet/savory crepes & other light fare”. It was perfect.
When you walked in, you could instantly feel the environment. It was casual, with just the right amount of seating, soft music playing in the background and a coffee aroma that any self proclaimed coffee connoisseur could appreciate. (Additional seating outside, with umbrellas and hanging lights, creating a total coffeehouse ambiance.)
We sat down and ordered our coffee. The first sip was one of the best first sips of coffee I’ve ever had. Dare I say the cliché – the coffee had a robust, smooth flavor. You could tell it was brewed using fresh, good quality beans. The wait staff was very attentive, refilling your coffee cup every so often so you always had a fresh cup at hand.
The breakfast menu was simple, mainly consisting of crepes, omelets, bagels and sandwiches, all available in different combinations. I had the Mediterranean omelet, filled with bell peppers, caramelized onions, baby spinach, kalamata olives and feta, served with a side salad. My boyfriend had the Therapy crepe, stuffed with cream cheese melted with Nutella, topped with walnuts and drizzled caramel. Both dishes were exceptionally good – I would highly recommend either one.
Cafe Mona is the perfect city spot to grab a friend, a cup of joe and a delicious brunch. Cafe Mona is Open seven days a week, Monday – Friday from 7am-3pm and Saturday – Sunday from 9am – 3pm.
