Cultured Cuisine: Casbah.

img_0749I wanted to go to a nice dinner. It was my birthday and I thought it was the perfect occasion to treat myself, so I made a reservation for Casbah.

Located in Shadyside, the Mediterranean kitchen and wine bar not only has a parking lot, but a complimentary valet service – now that is fancy.

occI handed my keys to the nice gentlemen and he kindly parked my car and I headed inside. We were seated in a beautiful room filled with plants and lights hung around the ceiling. It appeared that the roof was a removable tent that allowed guests to enjoy the fresh air when the weather was warm.

Our waiter was very professional and gave us the details of tonight’s specials and a wine list. I’m not a huge “wineo” so I ordered a beer, but my friend took this opportunity to enjoy a wine flight.

You have the option of Sparkling, White, Red and Rose. My friend selected the Red which included:

-Domaine Chateaumar Grenache, Rhone, FR: Raspberry, Olive, Dried Rose petal

-Vina Bujanda Crianza, Rioja, ES: Tamarind, Dill, Coconut

-Chocapalha Castelao, Lisboa, PT: Fruit Leather, Thyme, Tobacco

The Tamarind was the winner of the lot!


Now for the food. After some thought, I selected the orecchiette – grilled chicken, dried cranberries, Riverview Farms goat cheese, sage cream. The pasta was cooked just right and it tasted very creamy thanks to the goat cheese and sage cream. The cranberries pulled it all together with their sweet taste.

As every nice restaurant does – bread was brought to the table with two different types of butter. Both tasted great and complimented my pasta.

img_0738To my right, my friend ordered the gnocchi, but this wasn’t just gnocchi. Mixed with the pasta was duck confit, roasted cipollini onions, parsnips, carrots, autumn greens and Schof Kase. It smelled and looked delicious – and it was.

To my left filet mignon was delivered to the table. The steak was juicy and alongside was whipped Yukon gold potatoes, chevre, forest mushrooms, Brussel sprouts, pomegranate, covered in jus with a celery salad. The meat was tender and he enjoyed the special treat. It’s not every day you have filet mignon.img_0746

As we were finishing up our meals, the waiter brought a surprise to the table. He placed in front of me little-salted caramels with the words ” Happy Birthday” written on the plate in chocolate icing. My friends sang me the traditional birthday jingle and we all dove in. The morsels were delicious and a great way to end dinner.

Casbah doesn’t only serve lunch and dinner – Sunday brunch is available from 11am-2pm. Happy hour is also available Monday thru Friday from 5-7p.m. Grab a cocktail or a glass of wine.
